In 1398, Niclas Baumer holds the position of Castellan in Saanen, thus serving as the link between the population of the Saanenland valley and the authorities of Gruyères.

The people of Saanen wish to buy their freedom from the Gruyères, while the Savoyards are intent on binding them to themselves. Savoy does everything to suppress the trade. The drama unfolds: intrigues and power struggles stand in contrast to friendship and love. A play that impressively traces and touches upon the history of Saanenland.

Ruth Domke succeeds, as in the open-air theaters 'Farinet, the Counterfeiter' and 'Der Schwarz Steff', in portraying the character traits of the power-hungry, building tension, and weaving in the necessary portion of humor. This work also incorporates the ideas of Joelle Matti and Hanspeter Hefti. It is the first joint work of the drama authors' group JoPiRu.
